Day Two

exhaustion is fantastic. lack of sleep combined with the huge walk yesterday meant i slept like a baby last nite. alas, the same can not be said for so many of my other friends. there were a few biggies in the nite i believe, but i was oblivious. there wasn't even any dreaming, that is how exhausted i was.
it was surprising actually. we watched the butterfly effect last nite and i was SURE i would have had nightmares from it. every time there was a loud noise i'd jump a mile! skitzy MUCH!
even after a good sleep i didn't feel like doing much and so just mooched, watching internet updates and checking out geonet every time there was an aftershock, and there were more than a few!
after most of the day inside and really not feeling like i could truly appreciate what was going on, unless i got out there and a little look for myself, we took a little drive.
avonside is one of the most affected areas in christchurch, due to it's vicinity to the river and the land that it is built on, basically sand.  the cracks in the road and amount of silt that erupted from under the ground has left half the suburb uninhabitable.  if it's not the silt through the house, it's the house sinking into the ground.
no sewerage system, has meant the delivery of 'portaloos' into the area...one on every other drive.  power poles being held up by whatever means possible, some by rubbish bins, others huge blocks of concrete.
wandering around the suburb reiterated how lucky we were.  even if we don't own our house, at least we aren't having to look for somewhere new to live.
getting cold we went to leave, but were stopped by a grief stricken resident who had parked her car across the road and wasn't letting anyone in or out while she screamed at all the 'tourists'.
i can sympathise with her, it's a hard time and the last thing you need while you are trying to clean up is people who have time to have a look.  albeit i was one of those.
