Day One - Part 2

night has fallen and we are on a curfew. 7pm - 7am, no one is allowed inside the four avenues(essentially the cbd). it's for our own safety.
having spent the afternoon watching the live broadcast, and as imagery appears on the internet, i have realised that we were unbelievably lucky to have no damage, to ourselves or our belongings. there has been pure destruction out there. amazingly to date, no one has died.
the quake was initially rated at a magnitude of 7.4, but was soon dropped to 7.1. this is the same magnitude as the haiti quake earlier this year, in which approx. 230,000 lives were claimed and there was widespread damage.
the fact that this quake happened so early in the morning, the local population and the city's infrastructure has all aided in the toll sitting at zero, at this stage.
this evening as the sun was getting low, i went to the opposite of the cbd from where i live to see how that had feared.  omg, a disaster zone.  i can only imagine how bad town must be where is cordoned off.  sad day
wandering the streets i run into friends i haven't seen for months.  a fellow photographer with his camera slung over his shoulder.  naturally, we discuss the day's event...the lack of comprehension of some (another friend works in hospitality and had spoken of guests still expecting breakfast at 7am this morning).  but on the whole so far it seems to have brought people together.
