Day Five

slowly i stir, still really snoozing with a fluffy cat planted firmly in my face...another pretty solid night's sleep, then BOOM!
the biggest aftershock thus far, well it felt it.  honestly it felt nearly as big as saturday's quake...but as we were soon to find out it was not, but so close to our city and from a different direction.  poor lyttleton.
7:49am, 5.1, within 5 km of lyttleton and only 6km deep.  the two big shakes we've had from that direction definitely have felt much different from anything coming west.
geonet is our new best friend....informs us all of exactly how big, where and when the shocks are coming from.  it's our new bible for so many of us.  facebook holds many of us together also, comparing notes, discussing the shocks, status updates informing us of each and every shock...
"aftershock while in the shower....not so much fun.... first coffee of the day smashed on the floor......grrrrrrrrrrrrrr....mother earth enough!!!beautiful christchurch is bruised and battered....."
"Day 5 . Power out again . Armageddon"
"...wishes she had got up and sorted for her day earlier - am now too shaky to muck around inside with mundane things like clothes, coffee etc"
"ok ok we get it! you can stop now...!"
"That was SO bigger than 4.1!"
"Good MORNING christchurch! There she goes....and there goes more damage. Power out again....and just when they had got it almost all back on"
until now i had really been coping relatively well.  my nerves have been strong, surprisingly so.  not so today.  i was shaking like a leaf until midday.
i went to stock up on groceries, you can't get too lax.  tears welled in my eyes, whilst out and seeing the destruction of the city i now call home...
it was deathly quiet in our neighbourhood today.  most of the shops were closed and the carpark which is usually bustling, was near empty.  cracks in buildings had grown bigger, more bricks had fallen away from already damaged buildings.
as i surveyed the new damage a stranger stopped to talk to me.  another common occurrence of recent days.

sitting here now it feels like it is just continuously shaking...just like heavy traffic going passed...i can't tell if it's all in my head now, or actually happening
check out this site for an amazing visual of the quake and all the aftershocks.  it's like a fireworks display.

  1. OMG! I wish there was something I could do for you Kirtsy. I'm sorry you're having to endure this. Maybe a quick trip home to Auckland might give you the break you need ... just a thought ... if possible!?
You'll be in my thoughts and prayers!!
